Vietnam War
DateNovember 1 , 1955 End DateApril 30, 1975 Geographic BattlegroundVietnam, Cambodia, Laos Result In 1975, two years after the Americans left, South Vietnam was united with the North – it was now a communist state Reason for Going to WarThe U.S. government viewed involvement in the war as a way to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam as part of their wider strategy of containment. The North Vietnamese government and Viet Cong were fighting to reunify Vietnam under communist rule. They viewed the conflict as a colonial war, fought initially against France, backed by the U.S., and later against South Vietnam, which it regarded as a U.S. puppet state Important Notes
The North Vietnamese army – the NVA – massacredthousands of South Vietnamese after the Americans had left. Many people tried to flee South Vietnam (eg the “boat people”).
The Vietnamese had to fight wars against Cambodia and China before their independence was secured.
Vietnam was ruined – its infrastructure was destroyed, thousands of its people had been killed, and its farmland was polluted by American chemical warfare. It remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Victor Nations/Powers
