goodbye Toronto

Goodbye Toronto.

Hong walked into the glimmering lights of Pierson International Airport, the October weather had turned the leaves orange, and the cool wind from the north chilled her. Tow behind her was a small suite-case, and in it were all of her belongings, rampaging through her clothes, Hong took out a blue denim jacket and put it on. Looking at the nameplates on the counter, Hong headed toward Cathy Pacific Airlines.

It was an early flight back to Vietnam, a few people scattered among the empty seats. Hong looked at her watch, it would be another hour before boarding. She went to the Newsstand and brought herself a cup of mint tea and a gleam copy of People Magazines. Settle down at the first empty seat near the departing gate, she flipped through the magazines, eyeballing and convincing herself to stop thinking about this trip home. After ten minutes fighting with herself, she had enough and stood up, heading toward the window. The sun began to emerge, the Toronto skylines loomed out from the darkness.

Two years ago when Hong entered Canada looking at the same landscape that she now stood looking, she was fascinated, full admirations, and full of hope. But after laboring in the Nail Salon since the day she entered Canada, she just saved enough to pay for the fake wedding arrangement and a ticket home, along with that, her heart became collateral damage.

The landscapes are beautiful, how come the people are so cruel, Hong thought. This will be the last time I look at this city, Hong told herself. I will never come back here, Hong Continued.

Hong thought coming to Canada to find love and to start a family. She would be like the many Viet Kieu, Vietnamese with money, that had came home loaded with cash and looks that radiate life. All her friends would look at her and envies. However, in Canada, Hong only found work, work, and more work to pay for the rent, food, personal necessities and debt. Her day started when she woke up and ended with too tired to do anything else. When she met Dat, she thought he would provide for her the life that she had wanted, but after sleeping with him.  He disappeared. The incident with Dat, Hong felt like a wake up call. She quitted work and brought a ticket home: A place where it will be hot and dirty, and the people maybe less civilized, but everyone has a heart.
